SBAG Steering Committee Membership Guidelines

  1. The Steering Committee members should be as diverse as the community, in terms of topical interest (asteroids, comets, meteoroids, TNOs, KBOs, observational, experimental, computational, sample handling, etc.), demographics, experience, type of employer (commercial, small business, academia, government), and other parameters.

  2. The Steering Committee should consist of at least five members, and should not exceed twelve members unless additional expertise is necessary.

  3. The Steering Committee should have at least one member with expertise in each of the following: Planetary Defense, Human Exploration, and Technology to Enable Exploration.

  4. The Steering Committee should have at least two members whose primary expertise is small body planetary science research and analysis.

  5. The Steering Committee should have an Early-Career SBAG Coordination Lead, who should have less than three years of experience after a terminal degree (PhD, Master's, or Bachelor's).

  6. Steering Committee terms should be three years, except for the Early-Career SBAG Coordination Lead, whose term is two and one-half years.

  7. The Steering Committee should be led by a Chair, who should have previously served on the Steering Committee.

  8. The Chair of the Steering Committee should not be a NASA Civil Servant.

  9. New members of the Steering Committee, and the Chair of the Steering Committee, are elected by the members of the Steering Committee.

  10. To ensure that membership on the committee is not stagnant, prior members of the Steering Committee are eligible for additional terms on the Steering Committee only after a three year separation from the committee (with the exception of the Chair). Additionally, no more than 25% of the membership of the committee, other than the Chair, should consist of individuals who have previously served.

  11. Any member of the small body research and engineering community is eligible to apply for membership on the Steering Committee.

Additional Information on Steering Committee Membership:

  • Application for Steering Committee Membership requires a) a two-page CV, which should include a description of participation in SBAG or other small bodies community organizations, and b) a short (one-page or equivalent) statement of interest. Previous participation in SBAG is preferred, but not required.

  • The Steering Committee holds monthly telecons to plan the agenda for the next meeting.

  • The Steering Committee produces a list of Community Statements after each meeting and solicits feedback on them from the community. Community Statements are posted on the SBAG website and shared with parties that may be interested.

  • Steering Committee membership openings are advertised via the Small Bodies Community Google Group, the DPS Newsletter, and the Planetary Exploration Newsletter (PEN), and other channels.
